Universal Debunks Claims of Pay Disparity Between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for Wicked

Reports claiming a massive pay gap between Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have stirred up social media, but Universal Studios has firmly denied these allegations, labeling them “completely false.”

In the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved musical, Grande portrays Glinda, while Erivo takes on the role of Elphaba. Fans familiar with the stage production know both characters are central to the story, with Elphaba often regarded as the primary protagonist, given Wicked’s focus on her journey to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West.

Given the equal prominence of their roles, fans were shocked by rumors circulating online that suggested Grande earned $15 million for the film, while Erivo was paid only $1 million.

Viral TikTok Claims Spark Controversy

The rumors gained traction on TikTok, with one viral post claiming, “NO because the pay gap between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is INSANE. Ariana Grande paid 15 million, whilst Cynthia Erivo paid a measly one million for Wicked, when in my opinion, both had identical roles.”

Such claims sparked outrage among fans, particularly supporters of Erivo, who questioned how two leading roles could have such drastically different paychecks. However, Universal was quick to respond.

Universal Sets the Record Straight

A spokesperson for Universal addressed the controversy in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “Reports of pay disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on internet fodder. The women received equal pay for their work on Wicked.

This clarification was further supported by multiple sources reportedly close to the production, dismissing the viral figures as baseless speculation.

Reflecting on Industry Issues

While the rumors have been debunked, some social media users noted why such claims felt believable to many. A TikToker remarked, “Whoever started that rumor probably did it for clicks, likes, and views. […] But the reason it spread so much was because it was very believable.”

The user pointed out instances in Hollywood where Black actors have historically been paid less than their white counterparts, adding, “While the directors of Wicked did what needed to be done, there are a lot who would not do the same. So don’t spread lies, but don’t forget this is America.”

Wicked Smashes Box Office Records

Despite the pay controversy, Wicked has been a resounding success. Since its release on November 22 in the US and UK, the film has shattered box office records, grossing an impressive $164.2 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

As fans continue to celebrate the magic of the movie, the debunked rumors serve as a reminder of the importance of verifying facts before drawing conclusions.
