Vanished Thai Exchange Student Turns Up in Custody 4,000 Miles Away—Family Reeling as International Mystery Explodes

What began as a routine study abroad trip has spiraled into an international incident with chilling twists and no clear answers.

Nineteen-year-old Pattharaporn “Nina” Surasak vanished from her university dormitory in Chiang Mai, Thailand, nearly two months ago. Now, in a revelation that has stunned both her family and authorities, she has been found and arrested more than 4,000 miles away—in the heart of Istanbul, Turkey.

“I thought she was dead,” Nina’s mother Somjai Surasak told reporters, visibly trembling. “Then I see her face on the news—and she’s in handcuffs.”

The footage, aired on TRT Haber, showed Nina escorted by Turkish police through Istanbul Airport, flanked by plainclothes agents and refusing to speak.

Turkish authorities say Nina was apprehended during a routine passport check while trying to board a flight to Munich with a forged Belgian ID. What makes the case more confounding is that Thai police never issued an international alert—meaning she was not considered a fugitive until that moment.

“There’s no record of a warrant, no red notice, nothing,” said Turkish intelligence analyst Emre Göçer. “She just appeared out of nowhere.”

Interpol is now involved, and new details are leaking by the hour.

According to documents seen by Der Spiegel, Nina entered Turkey nearly six weeks ago on a tourist visa from Qatar. What she did in that time—and who she may have been with—remains a mystery.

But investigators confirmed that she was carrying encrypted USB drives and two unregistered smartphones when arrested, prompting speculation about potential links to underground networks.

Thai officials have downplayed any criminal implications.

“She’s just a scared girl who ran,” said a spokesperson for the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But that hasn’t satisfied the online frenzy, which is now deep into conspiracy territory.

A Reddit thread with over 22,000 upvotes claims she may have been part of an expat scamming ring operating across Southeast Asia, luring students into trafficking forged IDs and crypto wallets for dark web clients.

Still, no hard evidence has been made public.

Back home in Chiang Mai, her professors at the university remain stunned. One advisor, Dr. Preecha Intanon, described her as “quiet, brilliant, but withdrawn.” He said she had recently missed several exams and never responded to emails after March 17.

That’s the same day her phone last pinged near Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 3. From there, she vanished.

A fellow student who lived on her floor told Channel 3 News Thailand, “She had stopped talking to us weeks before. Like she was already leaving.”

The case has become a flashpoint in Thailand, with critics accusing local police of botching the investigation and failing to issue an alert until media pressure mounted. Twitter in Thailand trended the hashtag #WhereIsNina for days—until now.

As of this morning, Nina is being held in a secure juvenile detention facility in Istanbul while officials negotiate her possible extradition.

Legal experts say the lack of a criminal charge in Thailand could complicate her return. Turkish courts are expected to hold a closed-door hearing later this week to determine next steps.

Meanwhile, Nina’s parents are preparing to fly to Istanbul. “We just want to see her. We want to know why,” her mother said in a tearful interview.

And perhaps that’s the question haunting everyone: why?

Why did a promising student leave everything behind? Why travel through multiple countries with fake documents? Why carry encrypted drives?

And who, if anyone, was she running from—or to?

The story is still unfolding.

But what’s certain is this: Nina Surasak didn’t just disappear. She was on a mission.
