Eva Longoria has made the life-changing decision to relocate her family, splitting their time between Spain and Mexico, and leaving behind what she described as a “dystopian” United States.
In a candid interview with Marie Claire, the actress reflected on her years in Los Angeles, explaining why she felt it was time to move on.
“I had my whole adult life here,” Longoria shared about her time in California. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then COVID happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes – not that I want to s**t on California – it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”
A Shift Away from America
Longoria’s remarks have sparked discussions, particularly as she is known for her outspoken political views as a Democrat. While she voiced concerns about the possibility of Donald Trump’s second term in office, she also made it clear that her decision to move wasn’t directly tied to politics.
“I would like to think our fight continues,” she said, addressing Trump’s potential return to the presidency. “If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”
However, Longoria acknowledged her unique position of privilege, saying: “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”
Clarifying the Misconceptions
In a recent episode of The View: Behind the Table podcast, Longoria addressed what she called “clickbait” headlines that misrepresented her remarks.
“Would you please let them know that I didn’t move out of the United States because of Trump?” she asked her friend and co-host Ana Navarro.
Longoria expressed frustration over how parts of her Marie Claire interview were taken out of context to generate divisive narratives. “I’ve been in Europe working for almost three years,” she explained. “People just grabbed some clickbait stuff to be divisive, which makes me so sad. Everything you say is just meant to be divisive when we can’t be that way right now.”
A New Chapter in Spain and Mexico
Longoria now lives abroad with her husband, José Bastón, and their six-year-old son, Santiago. She emphasized that her family’s move was primarily driven by her work and the opportunities it brought her in Europe.
Navarro recalled Longoria’s previous remark about how living in Europe felt like “shutting off the noise.” Longoria agreed, adding: “Yeah, I mean being away from the constant 24-hour news cycle puts you in a bit of a bubble, for sure. That’s why I’m in Europe. I didn’t leave because of the political environment. I left because my work took me there.”
As Longoria continues to balance her career and family life across continents, she remains focused on her work while enjoying a quieter, less politically charged lifestyle.
