While reflecting on the success of John Wick during its 10th-anniversary celebration, Stahelski discussed how the reboot will bring a modern twist to the classic action-fantasy series. “We’re moving the setting forward from the early 1500s in the Scottish Highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong,” he explained. “There’s a huge opportunity for action.”
The upcoming adaptation promises to deliver a unique narrative blend, including elements of romance with a twist. Stahelski remarked, “It’s a bit of a love story, but not in the way you’d expect. Working on John Wick taught me how to bend storytelling, and I’ve applied those lessons here for another kind of myth.”
What drew Cavill to the role, according to Stahelski, was the depth and complexity of the protagonist—a martial arts master with over 500 years of experience. “My pitch to Henry was simple,” the director shared. “You’ll be portraying someone who’s been alive for half a millennium. He’s the last person who wanted to be in this situation, but his journey and skillset span centuries. It’s a rich character arc that’s both challenging and rewarding.”
Stahelski also emphasized the film’s dedication to honoring the legacy of the Highlander franchise, which began with the original 1986 movie. That story followed Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scottish Highlander who discovers his immortality after surviving a deadly battle wound. Mentored by fellow immortal Ramirez, portrayed by Sean Connery, Connor learns about his powers and the unique rules governing his existence. Over centuries, he battles other immortals, including the fearsome Kurgan, all vying for “The Prize,” the ultimate reward for the last immortal standing.
