Inmates Concoct Unbelievable Method to Have a Baby Without Ever Meeting in Person

A South Florida inmate has shared the astonishing story of how she became pregnant by another inmate without ever coming into physical contact with him. This unconventional conception has left many with questions, while experts have confirmed that, though rare, it is medically possible.

A Unique Relationship Born Through Air Vents

Daisy Link, 29, has been incarcerated at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade since 2022, serving time for second-degree murder. During her time there, she struck up an unlikely relationship with fellow inmate Joan Depaz, 24, who is also being held on murder charges.

The two began communicating through air conditioning vents, a practice Link described as common among isolated inmates.
“You can knock on the vents and hear people from different floors,” she explained. “After being in isolation for so long, you spend hours and hours talking. It felt like we were in the same room.”

Depaz admitted that he had always wanted a child but didn’t think it would be possible due to his incarceration. He proposed the idea of attempting to conceive despite their confinement, and the pair devised a creative solution.

A Clever but Controversial Method

Using the air vents in their cells, Depaz and Link managed to exchange materials that allowed them to conceive.
“The vents are L-shaped, so things can drop from one vent into another,” Depaz explained.

The pair fashioned a line using bedding material, allowing Depaz to send his semen to Link in small plastic packets. Depaz noted that he made “deposits” multiple times a day for a month, rolling them tightly like a cigarette and attaching them to the line.

Link then used yeast infection applicators to inseminate herself. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, she successfully became pregnant, an outcome Depaz humorously likened to “the Virgin Mary.”

Confirming the Unbelievable

A paternity test later confirmed that Depaz is indeed the father of Link’s child. While many have doubted the story, including Link’s own mother, medical experts have verified the possibility of such a conception.

Dr. Fernando Akerman, medical director of the Fertility Center of Miami, commented on the rarity of the situation:
“The chances were probably less than five percent, but not zero. This is an exceedingly unusual case, and to my knowledge, I’ve never heard or read anything like it.”

Life After Birth

Link gave birth to a baby girl on June 19, and the child is now being cared for by Depaz’s mother. Both parents remain in separate facilities but can see their daughter through video calls.

The Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center has stated that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy. A spokesperson remarked:
“The care, safety, and rehabilitation of all those in our custody remain our top priority. While there is no evidence of sexual battery against our inmate at this time, the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy are under active investigation.”

This extraordinary story has not only baffled the public but also highlighted the ingenuity and resilience of individuals, even in the most restricted environments.
