Afsheen Gul, a 13-year-old girl from Pakistan, has endured a life filled with challenges due to a rare and debilitating condition. Her journey recently took a miraculous turn when a compassionate doctor stepped in to perform life-changing surgery free of charge. Now, Afsheen is beginning to live the life every child deserves.
A Devastating Start
Afsheen was born a healthy child, but her life changed dramatically at just 10 months old when she fell from her sister’s arms, leaving her neck bent at a 90-degree angle. Diagnosed with atlantoaxial rotatory dislocation, a spinal disorder that severely limits neck movement, and cerebral palsy, her condition kept her confined to her home for over a decade.
Her mother, Jamilan Bibi, recalled the immense struggles the family faced. “She could not walk, eat, or talk. She used to just lie on the ground, and we had to assist her with everything.” Despite consulting several doctors, Afsheen’s condition only worsened, and her family could not afford further treatment.
A Glimmer of Hope
In 2018, Afsheen was admitted to Agha Khan University Hospital in Karachi, where doctors offered surgery with only a 50% chance of survival. Unable to bear the risk and without support from government officials, her parents decided to bring her home.
In 2019, British journalist Alexandria Thomas highlighted Afsheen’s story, drawing attention to her condition and her family’s financial struggles. This coverage helped connect the family with independent organizations, ultimately securing a medical visa for Afsheen to travel to India for treatment.
A Life-Changing Encounter
Afsheen’s turning point came when she was introduced to Dr. Rajagopalan Krishnan, a renowned specialist in complex spinal surgeries at Apollo Hospital in Delhi. After learning about her case, Dr. Krishnan agreed to perform the surgery pro bono.
Her brother, Yaqoob Qumbar, recalled how challenging this time was for the family. “Dr. Krishnan told us that her heart or lungs might stop during the operation,” he said, adding that Dr. Krishnan’s kindness and expertise gave them the hope they desperately needed.
A Complex Surgical Journey
Before undergoing the primary surgery, Afsheen had to endure two preparatory procedures. The main operation, lasting six hours, involved attaching her skull to her spinal cord with rods and screws to stabilize her neck. Dr. Krishnan revealed that without the surgery, Afsheen likely would not have survived much longer.
Following the surgery, Afsheen began a remarkable recovery. Within months, she was able to walk, talk, and eat independently, something she had never done before. Her brother shared, “She is smiling and talking now. Her progress is slow, but she is improving every day.”
A New Chapter
Dr. Krishnan described Afsheen’s case as unprecedented. “This is probably the first case of its kind in the world,” he remarked. Although she still faces challenges, including difficulty attending school and social judgment, her family is optimistic about her future.
“She is a little weak, but the doctor says she will improve with time,” Qumbar shared. “For us, Dr. Krishnan is an angel. He saved my sister’s life, and we will forever be grateful.”
Afsheen’s inspiring journey demonstrates the transformative power of compassion and medical expertise, giving her a renewed sense of hope and a chance to experience the joys of childhood.
