A devastating incident unfolded at Yellowstone National Park when a man attempting the dangerous activity of “hot potting” tragically fell into a boiling hot spring, resulting in his body dissolving completely within 24 hours.
Yellowstone National Park, which spans across Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, draws over three million visitors annually due to its breathtaking geothermal features and natural beauty. However, the park’s stunning landscapes also conceal significant dangers, particularly the boiling hot springs scattered throughout the area, which can reach lethal temperatures.
Among the most tragic incidents in recent history was the death of 23-year-old Colin Scott, from Portland, Oregon, who visited the park with his sister in June 2016. The siblings were exploring a restricted area of the park near the Yellowstone caldera, a massive supervolcano known for its intense geothermal activity. Despite multiple warning signs posted around the site advising visitors to remain on the designated boardwalk for their safety, the siblings chose to venture off the marked paths.
The dangerous practice they were engaging in is commonly referred to as “hot potting,” which involves soaking in natural hot springs. Although it might seem appealing due to the appearance of calm, warm water, these springs can be extremely deceptive. The deeper geothermal pockets can reach scalding temperatures exceeding 199 degrees Fahrenheit, often appearing deceptively inviting while being lethally hot.
On that fateful day, Colin and his sister were searching for a suitable spot to attempt hot potting. While his sister reportedly recorded their adventure on her smartphone, Colin accidentally slipped and fell into a superheated thermal pool before they could settle on a spot. The footage recorded by his sister reportedly captured the tragic moment when he lost his footing, followed by her frantic efforts to save him.
Due to the remoteness of the location, his sister had no cellphone signal to call for help. Desperate, she ran to a nearby museum to seek assistance. Unfortunately, by the time park rangers arrived, it was already too late.
When emergency personnel reached the scene, they discovered Colin’s body partially submerged in the boiling pool. His head, upper torso, and hands were still visible in the azure blue water. However, the extreme temperatures had already inflicted severe thermal burns, and the body showed no signs of movement.
US Park Ranger Phil Strehle documented the scene, stating that the conditions made it evident the victim had not survived:
“Due to the extreme temperatures, lack of movement, and visible thermal injuries, the individual was determined to be deceased.”
Further complicating recovery efforts was the unpredictability of the area itself. The geothermal pool where Colin fell is part of the Yellowstone caldera, which is highly volatile and prone to sudden heat surges and dangerous weather patterns. A lightning storm was approaching, adding further risk to the recovery team.
Because of these hazards, the rescuers were unable to retrieve Colin’s body safely that night. When they returned the next day, his remains had completely dissolved. Only a few personal belongings, including his wallet and flip-flops, were recovered from the area.
Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress described the tragic consequences:
“In a very short period, there was a significant amount of dissolving due to the extreme geothermal activity.”
Park spokesperson Charissa Reid further confirmed:
“Rescue personnel could only recover a few personal items. No remains were left to be retrieved.”
Out of respect for the Scott family, authorities chose not to release the video footage captured during the incident, nor did they provide a detailed description of its content. The family was left to grieve this devastating loss, with Park Superintendent Dan Wenk later issuing a public statement emphasizing the importance of safety in such areas:
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Scott family. This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder for all visitors to adhere strictly to park regulations and remain on designated pathways.”
Yellowstone National Park is no stranger to fatal incidents involving geothermal features. Its hot springs and geysers, while mesmerizing, pose a constant danger due to their extreme temperatures and sudden bursts of steam. The park authorities continue to stress the importance of staying on the designated boardwalks, which are designed to ensure visitor safety while offering views of these natural wonders.
