What Is a Rainbow Kiss?
A rainbow kiss refers to an intimate act involving the exchange of bodily fluids between a person with a uterus and a person with a penis. Typically performed in the 69 position, the defining feature is that one partner is menstruating.
After one partner ejaculates and the other has menstrual blood in their mouth, they kiss, mixing the two fluids to create the “rainbow.”
The term is often confused with “snowballing,” which involves a person ejaculating into another’s mouth and the two exchanging the semen back and forth through kissing.
Dr. Wendasha Jenkins Hall, PhD, a sex educator and founder of The Sensible Sexpert, explained the origins of the act to Cosmopolitan. “This likely started as a variation of the 69 position,” she said, describing it as “a level up from that.”
Is It Safe to Perform a Rainbow Kiss?
While the act is technically possible, there are important safety considerations to keep in mind.
Participants must be of legal age and provide enthusiastic consent. It’s also crucial to know whether either person has sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as these can be easily transmitted through the exchange of fluids.
Heather Irobunda, MD, explained to Cosmopolitan the risks involved: “Semen and period blood can carry lots of different infectious particles, such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.”
She added that rainbow kisses should be avoided if either person has cuts, sores, ulcers in the mouth, or bleeding gums, as these conditions increase the risk of infection, including HIV.
Precautions and Testing
Dr. Irobunda emphasized the importance of knowing your partner’s STD status before engaging in any such act. Regular testing is recommended for sexually active individuals, with experts advising tests every three to six months.
“Safety should always come first,” Dr. Irobunda stressed.
While the trend may be shocking to many, it serves as a reminder of the importance of informed decision-making and open communication in intimate relationships.
