Restaurant Plans to Sue Customer After He Leaves $3,000 Tip on a $13 Meal

A restaurant in the United States is now preparing to take legal action against a customer who left a staggering $3,000 tip on a modest $13 meal, only to later dispute the charge—leaving the establishment at a significant financial loss.

The Never-Ending Debate on Tipping Culture

The topic of tipping etiquette has long been a hot-button issue, with divided opinions on how much (or even if) a customer should tip their server.

Some people argue that tipping is a necessity, especially in the U.S., where restaurant staff often rely on gratuities to supplement low wages. Others believe that tipping should be reserved for truly exceptional service, rather than being an unspoken obligation every time someone dines out.

However, in this case, the debate wasn’t about whether to tip—but rather, whether an astronomical tip could turn into a restaurant’s worst nightmare.

An Unexpected Windfall—or So It Seemed

The unusual situation unfolded when Eric Smith, a customer at Alfredo’s Pizza Café in Scranton, Pennsylvania, placed an order for a single stromboli, a meal that cost him a mere $13.

What happened next left the entire restaurant staff stunned.

Instead of tipping a modest percentage, Smith wrote in a jaw-dropping $3,000 gratuity on his receipt. At first, the staff couldn’t believe their eyes—a tip of this size is something that most servers only dream of receiving.

‘Tips for Jesus’—A Social Media Trend?

According to reports, Smith’s outrageous generosity was allegedly inspired by a viral social media movement called “Tips for Jesus”—a trend where customers leave massive tips for unsuspecting servers to brighten their day.

Waitress Mariana Lambert, who was the recipient of the tip, was overwhelmed with gratitude. Speaking about the experience at the time, she described just how much the generous act meant to her.

“It really touched my heart,” she shared. “Everyone is going through something these days, and this really meant the world to me. I still can’t believe it happened—I’m still in shock.”

For a brief moment, it seemed like a heartwarming act of kindness.

But just when it appeared too good to be true—it was.

The Tip That Became a Nightmare

What initially seemed like an incredible gesture quickly turned into a financial disaster for Alfredo’s Pizza Café.

Vice President Leslie Minicozzi Galacci later revealed that nearly two months after the generous tip was left, the restaurant received an unexpected notification:

Smith had disputed the charge with his credit card company.

This left the restaurant owners with a massive dilemma.

They had already issued a check to their employee to honor the $3,000 tip, assuming everything was legitimate. But now, with Smith refusing to take responsibility, Alfredo’s found itself stuck covering the loss.

“We had already paid Mari the $3,000 by company check,” Galacci explained. “And now, we’re the ones left paying the price for this.”

Restaurant Attempts to Contact the Customer—But He Disappears

Initially, the restaurant’s management tried to reach out to Smith, hoping the issue was simply a misunderstanding that could be resolved amicably.

But instead of explaining or fixing the situation, Smith completely ghosted them.

This led to mounting frustration within the business.

Legal Action Becomes the Only Option

Restaurant manager Zachary Jacobson expressed his frustration over the situation, revealing that they had no choice but to take legal action.

“At first, we thought somebody was just doing something good, a kind act,” he explained. “We were all excited about it.”

But as weeks passed with no sign of the customer, Jacobson grew more frustrated.

“We’re now almost three months down the road, and there’s nothing to show for it,” he added. “It’s causing unnecessary drama and stress.”

After Smith allegedly told them to ‘sue him’, the restaurant decided to do exactly that.

“Unfortunately, we had to file charges through the magistrate’s office because now we’re just out of this money at this point,” Jacobson said.

Alfredo’s Pizza Café Takes Smith to Court

Given that the restaurant had already honored the tip by paying their waitress, they are determined to recover the lost funds.

Alfredo’s, which was even mentioned in the hit TV show The Office, is moving forward with legal action in an attempt to hold Smith accountable for his actions.

At this point, the lawsuit is officially underway, and the restaurant hopes to win back the money that was lost due to Smith’s disputed payment.

While random acts of kindness can be life-changing, this case has highlighted the potential risks that come with blindly trusting large gratuities, especially when credit card disputes can leave businesses footing the bill.

Whether or not Alfredo’s wins their case, this wild tipping saga serves as a cautionary tale for both restaurants and servers alike.
