Trump signs explosive order banning entry from 12 countries, sparking global outrage and mass protests

In a sweeping and controversial move, Donald Trump has signed an executive order officially banning entry into the United States from 12 specific countries — a decision already being called one of the most aggressive immigration crackdowns in modern U.S. history.

The order, signed late Tuesday evening and quietly posted to the White House website hours later, immediately bars all visa issuance, refugee processing, and border entry from the affected nations — many of which are Muslim-majority or politically unstable. The full list includes: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Pakistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Venezuela, and North Korea.

The decision has triggered instant global backlash. Human rights groups, immigration attorneys, and even some Republican lawmakers have condemned the move as “reckless,” “xenophobic,” and “a dangerous escalation” in Trump’s hardline border policy.

According to The New York Times, the order’s language echoes Trump’s infamous 2017 “Muslim Ban,” but expands its scope and legal teeth by including non-Muslim countries and refugee bans without expiration timelines.

Trump’s new immigration ban isn’t about security. It’s about fear. Twelve entire nations, just cut off. Families destroyed overnight. #Ban12— Rep. Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) June 4, 2025

Homeland Security sources told Politico that the order will be enforced by Customs and Border Protection immediately, with visa revocations already underway for citizens from the listed countries — even those who had already been approved for travel.

Thousands of travelers were reportedly stranded overnight in foreign airports, as U.S.-bound flights were canceled or redirected.

Protests have already erupted in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. At JFK International Airport, hundreds gathered in terminal lobbies with signs reading “LET THEM IN” and “WE STAND WITH BANNED FAMILIES.”

Civil rights organizations like the ACLU, CAIR, and Amnesty International are preparing lawsuits, arguing the order is unconstitutional and violates due process rights of permanent residents and visa holders.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has issued a scathing rebuke. President Biden, who remains in recovery following a recent health scare, released a statement through his press secretary calling the executive order “a dangerous and discriminatory overreach” that would be reversed if Democrats return to power.

Trump defended the policy during a campaign rally in Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday night.

Former national security officials, however, are warning that the blanket ban could have severe diplomatic consequences. According to a report by Foreign Policy, several countries on the list — including Nigeria and Pakistan — have already summoned U.S. ambassadors for emergency consultations.

Families across the U.S. are now scrambling to adjust to the new reality. In Michigan, 27-year-old Mariam Zahir told The Detroit News that her parents were scheduled to fly in from Pakistan next week to attend her wedding. “Now they’re banned. I have a dress, a venue, everything. But I don’t have them.”

On Reddit’s immigration board, a mega-thread titled “The Ban is Back” has garnered over 12,000 comments in just hours. Stories range from separated families to international students fearing deportation.

Legal experts say emergency injunctions may pause parts of the order in coming weeks, but for now, its impact is immediate and punishing.
